AI search by the numbers: the stats every brand should know in 2026

The data behind the shift from ranking to being cited — AI adoption, zero-click behaviour, citation economics and what it means for your visibility.

[ the answer ]

In 2026, AI answers are mainstream: Google AI Overviews appear in about 25% of searches and reach ~2 billion people monthly, ChatGPT has ~900 million weekly users, and roughly 60% of Google searches end without a click. The brands that get cited in those answers earn ~35% more clicks and far higher conversion — being referenced now beats being ranked.

Adoption is no longer early

Answer engines are where your buyers already are. ChatGPT handles around 2 billion queries a day, and Google's AI Overviews have expanded fast — appearing in roughly a quarter of searches, up from about 13% a year earlier.

The zero-click reality

As answers improve, clicks shrink. Around 60% of Google searches now end without a click to any third-party site, and roughly 93% of AI search sessions end without a website visit at all. If the answer doesn't include you, the buyer may never know you exist.

But citations pay

The flip side is the opportunity. Brands cited in AI answers earn about 35% more organic clicks than those left out, and AI-referred visits convert dramatically better — roughly 14% versus about 2.8% for classic organic. Fewer clicks, but far higher intent.

Visibility is volatile

AI answers change often — the citations for a given query are replaced frequently, and only about 30% of brands remain visible across back-to-back responses. Content rich in statistics and quotes earns 30–40% more visibility, and fresh content (updated within ~2 months) earns meaningfully more citations than stale pages.

The takeaway: success is no longer measured by keyword position. It's measured by how often you're cited — and that's a number you can track and grow.
